In Japanese bathrooms, three circles (〇〇〇) typically represent a women’s restroom. This is a minimalist, abstract design sometimes used in modern or quirky venues. Two circles (〇〇) are the counterpart for men, playing on anatomical or stylized “hole” representations.

However, circles are rarely the only indicator. To ensure you are heading into the correct facility, look for these standard Japanese bathroom signs:

1. Standard Color Coding & Symbols

Japan uses a very consistent color-coding system for restrooms:

• Red (赤): Women’s restroom.
• Blue (青): Men’s restroom.

2. Kanji Characters (If symbols aren’t clear)

If there are no pictograms, you will usually see these written on the doors or on overhead signs:

• 女 (Onna): Means “Woman” or “Female.”
