When cameras first captured the teenage couple in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the cracks in their foundation were immediate. Maci was an ambitious high school junior, while Ryan was a slightly older, passive boyfriend who struggled to grasp the looming reality of parenthood.

Following the birth of their son, Bentley, in October 2008, the couple attempted to force a traditional family structure, even getting briefly engaged.
