Teen Mom began as a spin‑off of MTV’s documentary series 16 and Pregnant. While 16 and Pregnant followed different pregnant teenagers through the final months of pregnancy and the first weeks after birth, Teen Mom stayed with some of those young mothers long term.

The idea was to show what happens after the baby is born: the daily realities of parenting, money problems, finishing school, and navigating complicated relationships.

According to Jenelle, the show is not cancelled. Teen Mom Next Chapter currently has 2 seasons, but it seems like another one is on the way.
